Willingham Guides collect spectacles

Willingham Guides worked on the Girlguiding Surrey East County’s Queen’s 90th Birthday Challenge Badge recently. For one of the clauses of the badge, they linked up with a Guide and Brownie group in Malawi.

Josie Charter, from AquAid, visited the group and told the Guides that a practical way to help the people of Malawi is to collect and send spectacles to them. A pair of glasses in Malawi costs around £16, which can be the equivalent to one month’s salary!

So the Guides set themselves a target of collecting 25 pairs of glasses for Josie to take to Malawi on her next trip in July. On 21 April, the Queen’s 90th Birthday, the Guides sorted and counted their collection so far. Sorting them not only entailed checking they had lenses and two arms, but also trying many pairs on, resulting in much hilarity and squeals of “everything is so blurry!”

When they were all sorted and the broken ones rejected, the Guides were excited to find they had 350 pairs! They’re still collecting them, so hopefully when they next see Josie, she’ll be able to fill another suitcase.
