In August, Milton and Willingham Guides joined with 4,000 Guides and Scouts from 22 different countries to camp at Charnwood 2016 in Leicestershire. The theme of the camp was “A World of Entertainment” and the Guides, aged 10-13, were part of the “Epic 80s” sub-camp.
The girls went to a different “channel” each day to try out some of the hundreds of activities on offer. They had many new experiences from wood turning and rope making in the Baden-Powell Challenge, glass engraving in the Diversity Zone, circus skills and stilt walking in The Zone through to water sports and real rock climbing in Derbyshire. However the favourite day was in Extreme 16 – Charnwood’s own inflatable theme park. The girls spent the day water zorbing, attempting to stay on the bucking bronco, playing inflatable Hungry Hippos, bungee trampolining and playing other inflatable games.
When the day activities finished, the girls were ready for the evening entertainment. With a choice of the cinema, inter sub-camp game shows, circus skills, Charnwood’s Got Talent, discos or just chilling with friends old and new in the juice bar or central area there was plenty to do.
Even with all the activities going on the girls and the Leaders still found time to make new friends. The girls met Guides from Malaysia and were able to swap badges with them as well as being invited for hot chocolate with Scouts from Harrogate and a group from Wantage.
The girls voted the camp a huge success although it was not without its dramas. They all had to sleep in the mess tent one night because their sleeping tents were taken down to prevent them being damaged in the very strong winds. On the final night most of the girls didn’t sleep in their tents either. The night was warm and dry so they slept out under the stars.
All too soon it was time to say goodbye to new friends and to go home with the girls asking when the next Charnwood camp is!
