The Girlguiding Anglia Buddy Award was launched last Saturday. The award is for young members within Anglia Region who volunteer their time to help their peers with special needs. Two groups of recipients for this new award were from our county. Congratulations to them all! Heidi Riches, Helen Mannell and Rachel Copping have shown great care and compassion supporting the SPICE Guides members during their monthly unit meetings, on sleepovers and holidays and even on an international trip to Disneyland Paris! Their dedication and enthusiasm has meant that many SPICE Guides have been able to benefit from fun, challenge and adventure through guiding as well as making new friends, trying new things and building their confidence. Katie Holmes, Clare Parrish, Judith Barwise and Caroline Chant showed great commitment, problem-solving skills and teamwork when completing their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition last summer, with a group that included a member of The Senior Section who is a wheelchair user.

We caught up with one of the nominators for the award, Caroline Daboo, who explained how her nominated buddies helped her achieve her Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. “I approached the idea of doing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition as a potential impossibility and it would have been just that without the amazing team that we ended up with. Any of the girls could have done a ‘normal’ expedition with far less hassle, effort, time and energy, but the fact that they chose to take on the challenge of a different expedition really meant a lot to me. I could not have done it without them, and I have learnt so much along the way. When the challenges seemed endless, they were there beside me laughing and working to think of unconventional ways to solve unusual problems. I had so much fun and gained so much confidence through the process and I am incredibly grateful to all four of my buddies for what they have done. My Duke of Edinburgh’s Award means so much more to me because of the stories behind it and the incredible friendships I have made with the people who gave so much of their own time to help me. They are truly special people and I am so happy that their dedication and commitment has been recognised – I can’t think of better recipients!”
