Brownies visit Wicken Fen

1st Histon Brownies recently enjoyed a wonderful spring evening at Wicken Fen Nature Reserve. While pond dipping they were excited to find several newts and a water scorpion and then they were lucky enough to see a newly hatched dragonfly drying its wings.

They also tried log lifting and learned the difference between centipedes and millipedes – it’s not all about the legs! At the end of the evening, they were thrilled to see a barn owl flying over the fen.

Alison, aged 9, said “I loved finding the newts. They are different colours on their tummies and backs.”

The Leaders had organized the trip to enable the Brownies to complete their Wildlife Explorer badge. Earlier in the term, the group made bird feeders and hung them in their local Community Orchard.
