1st Willingham Guides had a fascinating evening recently when Anneke, one of the Leader’s Mums visited the unit to help them make fascinators (small hats) as part of their Queen’s 90th Birthday Challenge.
Anneke brought along examples of fascinators and small hats that she had made herself to inspire the girls, plus a variety of coloured material and feathers. Anneke had pre-prepared the special sinamay fabric (a material made from banana palms) into biased strips of various widths and lengths, and had neatened the edges by folding in twice to the middle. To keep costs down for the Guides, lots of remnants were used.
The Guides – and some of the Rangers who also joined them- had fun picking out different colours and sizes of sinamay strips, then making loops and bows, adding feathers and even managing some sewing! The glue gun was also put to good use.
In just 90 minutes all the girls made a fascinator they could wear – some sewed in hairclips, while others fastened their creations to plastic or metal hairbands.
Everyone came away with something wearable (including the Leaders) and some hidden talents were discovered in some of the girls!
