Girls from the 1st Steeple Morden Guides have been fighting it out over dough and pastry in a quest to be named as Bake Off Champion!
The girls aged 10-14, took part in the unit round for Guides over a three week period. The first round was for a cake they had baked themselves which they made at home and decorated during their meeting. Judging took place at the end of the meeting with everyone tasting every cake. We voted for our winner, that week it was Lucy, aged ten. The second round was the technical challenge and involved all Guides making shortbread during a meeting – it was a challenge getting them all baked in our one small oven! The winner that week was Sophie, aged ten. The final round was the Showstopper Challenge and the Guides held a Mad Hatters Tea Party. Parents were invited to the event where the girls baked scones, filled sandwiches and decorated cupcakes. Our winner was Olivia aged 14, with a stunning array of treats including sandwiches made from home baked bread.
A final event is still to take place to work out who will represent 1st Steeple Morden in the County final on 14 June.
Leader Jane said “The girls were keen on the Bake Off Challenge so we committed to doing it for three weeks in meetings. They have been fantastic meetings, the Guides have shown great teamwork, friendship and sharing – offers to help when things go wrong have been ever present. The girls have shown great confidence in the challenges, tackling them with real enthusiasm, even when these have been new experiences for them. Of course there has been lots of creativity on show, and finally, they have all shown great sportsmanship with no sulking or complaining about anything. Everyone has earned their badge!”
