Three Brownies from different units in Cambridge and Histon travelled to London last weekend to attend a Big Brownie Birthday Sleepover at Pax Lodge, one of the Girlguiding World Centres. The event started with a pinning ceremony where each of the 50 attendees from across Anglia received a special badge to show that they’ve slept at Pax Lodge.
After a tour of the house, they went on an adventure to Hampstead Heath where they learned new games from the USA and Canada – the home nations of the volunteers leading the weekend. Later they discussed how they could keep their promise to help other people both locally and across the world and the girls then covered the wall with their illustrated ideas.
In the evening they had a Big Brownie Birthday Party and Gill Slocombe, the Chief Guide, joined in the fun. They celebrated with games, dancing, singing and a huge chocolate cake with candles for them all to blow out. The three Cambridgeshire East Brownies were especially excited when Gill gave them each a “Chief Guide’s Team” badge.
Ciara, aged 10, said “It was so cool to meet Guides from across England and the world and to learn more about what they do. The Canadian uniform is really nice and I’d like to go to one of their Brownie meetings one day.” When Hope, also aged 10, was asked what the best part of the weekend was, she said “Celebrating the Big Brownie Birthday with all the other Brownies, meeting the Chief Guide and eating cake!” And Grace, aged 9, simply said “It was the best day of my life”.
