Rainbows from the 1st Manea, 4th March, 1st & 2nd Bar Hill and 4th Newmarket Rainbows took a walk on the wild side during a day-long takeover of Colchester Zoo in Essex.
The Rainbows, all aged between five to seven, joined more than 2,000 other girls from across the region on the thrilling safari adventure on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 July 2014.
During the girl-only weekend, the Rainbows got the chance to explore the zoo, spot exotic animals and meet mini beasts. They also took part in a hunt for their Rainbow mascot – called Olivia – in a trail taking them right through the zoo.
The girls also chose to adopt two animals – Lili the Giraffe and Opal the Elephant – after staging a vote before heading off on their zoo adventure.
Lili is a female reticulated giraffe who arrived at Colchester Zoo in 2009, from Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic. She is the same age as many of the Rainbows and will be celebrating her sixth birthday on 29 July 2014.
Opal is a female elephant who was rescued from Chipperfield Circus and has been in Colchester Zoo since 1998.
Madeline aged 6 said “It was great feeding the elephant and visiting the zoo with my Rainbow friends.”
Leader from 1st Manea Rainbows, Sophie McNamara, said “It was a great opportunity for the girls to learn about endangered species.”
