The Jarman Centre greeted around 100 visitors for their annual Free Family Fun day on Bank Holiday Monday, 5 May.
The Jarman Centre is Girlguiding Cambridgeshire East’s residential centre set in 18 acres of woodland on the outskirts of Newmarket.
A lovely spring day provided the perfect backdrop for a host of Roald Dahl-themed activities: from trying Willy Wonka’s chocolate fountain (coating some rather strange but edible items with chocolate!) to making dreamcatchers from the BFG and clay friends of Fantastic Mr Fox. Families could hunt for minibeasts (James and the Giant Peach), and practise ‘Going Solo’ with parachute games. Trails led visitors around the estate, with archery and backwoods camp skills also on offer.
We had lots of lovely comments: “What a great day … We had a really great time today … What a fantastic place the Jarman Centre is, we never knew it was here …”
And we’d like to publicly thank the volunteers and friends who came to help – we couldn’t put on this event each year without you!
The idea for the day came from a Roald Dahl Challenge set up by 1st Tinto Brownies, Lanarkshire, to raise money for their unit holidays and we are delighted that all the badges were awarded, with a few extra being ordered for those missed out on their badge on the day.
