1st Guilden Morden Brownies have been working on their Friends to Animals badge. For part of the badge they held a Bring and Buy sale to raise money for Shepreth Hedgehog Hospital which is run by Shepreth Wildlife Conservation Charity. The girls raised £85 for the hospital by selling toys and books that they no longer wanted.
Jane Taylor from the Hedgehog Hospital went along to a Brownie meeting to talk to the girls about the work of the hospital. There they treat and rehabilitate hedgehogs brought in by the public before releasing them back into the wild.
Jane brought Humphrey with her, an African pigmy hedgehog. Humphrey often goes out with Jane when she gives talks to groups. This is because you can’t take out wild hedgehogs to show off. She also explained that hedgehogs don’t make very good pets because they are nocturnal and are great at escaping!
