Guides are up for a challenge

Guides from Doddington Village

Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and members of The Senior Section from Doddington village have been busy this term with their members taking part in a host of activities.

Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and members of The Senior Section took Easter gifts to the residents of Askham Care Homes in the village and held an Easter egg hunt in the care home grounds.

The Guides have been to PGL Caythorpe Court for an activity weekend which included raft building, high ropes, go-carting and an assault course.

The Guides and Senior Section were joined at their May weekend camp in the grounds of Askham Care Homes by the Rainbows and Brownies for a challenge day and campfire. The challenges included changing the wheel on a car for the Senior Section and older Guides, repairing a bicycle puncture, making and climbing a rope ladder, following nature trails, making bird feeders and eating jelly and ice cream with chopsticks. In total 24 challenges were completed and these were sponsored to raise funds for transport to and from residential activities and outings. Guest of honour at the campfire was County Vice-President Gladys Harwin who has been a member of guiding in March District for 83 years. Gladys said “Guiding has changed as the lives of the girls have changed. Some activities remain the same. We used to have camps and campfire singing when I was a guide, but the songs now are more modern.” Gladys enjoyed eating the dampers and drop scones made by the girls and shared with them some old campfire songs and camp recipes including cheese melts.
